ANGELOS SAMARTZIS

VITA

The Greek tenor Angelos Samartzis was born in Athens and brought up in Rhodes.

He studied singing at the Athenaeum Conservatory, obtained a bachelor’s degree at the Karlsruhe University of Music and a master’s degree at the University of Music Hanns Eisler Berlin. His mentors include artists such as Franco Farina, Julia Varady and Raina Kabaivanska.

A most versatile artist, he has sung most of the major roles of the italian repertoire, especially in operas by Verdi (Manrico in “Il Trovatore”, Gustavo in “Un ballo in maschera”, the title role in “Don Carlos”, Don Alvaro in “La Forza del Destino”, Alfredo in “La traviata” and Ismaele in “Nabucco”) and Puccini (Rodolfo in “La bohème”, Mario Cavaradossi in “Tosca”, Pinkerton in “Madama Butterfly”, Calaf in “Turandot”, Dick Johnson in “La Fanciulla del West”, Luigi in “Il Tabarro” and Rinuccio in “Gianni Schicchi”), as well as Turiddu in Mascagni’s “Cavalleria Rusticana”. He has sung major french opera roles such as the title roles in Gounod’s “Faust”, Massenet’s “Werther” and Offenbach’s “Les contes d’Hoffmann”, as well as Don José in Bizet’s “Carmen” and Jason in Cherubini’s “Médée”. His repertoire includes roles in german operas (Bacchus in “Ariadne auf Naxos ” and Narraboth in “Salome” by Richard Strauss, as well as Froh in Wagner’s”Das Rheingold”), comic Opera (Marquis de Chateauneuf in Lortzing’s “Zar und Zimmermann”), operetta (Camille de Rossillon in Lehar’s “Die lustige Witwe”), zarzuela (Javier Moreno in Torroba’s “Luisa Fernanda”) and musical (Tony in Bernstein’s “West Side Story”). He has also sung the tenor parts in Beethoven’s 9th symphony and in Bruckner’s “Te Deum”.

Among theatres in which he has appeared are the Greek National Opera, Royal Opera of Versailles, Danish National Opera, Royal Danish Opera, Estonian National Opera, Bolshoi Theatre of Belarus Minsk, Perm Opera and Ballet Theatre and Wroclaw Opera. German theatres include Opernhaus Nürnberg, Saarländisches Staatstheater, Staatstheater Braunschweig, Oper Halle, Staatstheater Kassel, Theater Freiburg, Musiktheater im Revier Gelsenkirchen, Pfalztheater Kaiserslautern, Theater Nordhausen and Eutiner Festspiele. He has also appeared in concert venues such as the Konzerthaus Berlin, the Philharmonie Luxembourg and the Casa da Musica in Porto.

He is currently in the ensemble of the Saarland State Theatre, where he is going to perform his debut as Radamès in Verdi’s “Aida” in June 2024.

This season he is going to collaborate twice with the Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino , singing Calaf in Puccini’s “Turandot” and Manrico in Verdi’s “Il Trovatore”, both under the baton of Maestro Zubin Mehta.
