The tenor Angelos Samartzis was born in Athens and raised in Rhodes.
He studied singing and music theory at the Athenaeum Conservatory, as well as law at the University of Athens. He received his bachelor in opera singing from the Institute for Music Theater of the University of Music Karlsruhe, where he studied with Stephan Kohlenberg and Julia Varady. He continued his education as a Master’s student at the University of Music Hanns Eisler Berlin with Stephan Rügamer, Julia Varady and Peter Berne. He attended master classes under Jane Henschel, Cheryl Studer, Robert Dean Smith, Marlis Petersen, Donald Litaker, Janet Williams, David L. Jones, Brian Zeger and Wolfram Rieger. He is currently working with Raina Kabaivanska.
In 2007 he made his debut at the Greek National Opera as Ramiro in “La Cenerentola”(children’s opera) by Rossini.
During his studies, he performed various roles such as Faust (Gounod, Faust), Rodolfo (Puccini, La boheme), Giraffier (Offenbach, Les deux aveugles) and Lacouf (Poulenc, Les mamelles de Tirésias).
He has sung in concerts and opera galas with various orchestras, such as the Brandenburg State Orchestra Frankfurt, the Thuringian Philharmonic Orchestra, the Brandenburg Symphony Orchestra, the Solothurn State Orchestra, the Orchestra of the Opera at the Castle of Stettin and the Czestochowa Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra.
In August 2015 he made his debut as Hoffmann (Offenbach, Les contes d’Hoffmann) in Bad Orb.
In January 2016, he performed in the world Premiere of the opera “Das schwarze Wasser” (V.&K.Bhatti) at the Neuköllner Oper in Berlin.
In June 2016 he enjoyed a major success in the mega opera event “The Spanish Night with Carmen-Zarzuela Show”, a production of the Wroclaw Opera staged at the Stadion Miejski, watched by an international audience of around 30.000 people.
In August 2016, he made his debut as Cavaradossi in Tosca’s production of the Schloss Rheinsberg Festival.
During the season 2016/2017, he was a member of the ensemble of the Theater Nordhausen, where he performed roles such as Rodolfo (Puccini, La bohéme), Javier Moreno (Torroba, Luisa Fernanda), Narraboth (R.Strauss, Salome) and Chateauneuf (Lortzing, Zar und Zimmermann), as well as the tenor part in Beethoven’s 9th symphony.
Since August 2017 he is member of the ensemble of the Saarland State Theater in Saarbrücken, where he is going to perform Rodolfo (Puccini, La boheme), Narraboth (R.Strauss, Salome) and Ismaele (Verdi, Nabucco).
